48 hour

The fabulous 48 hour game making challenge was first run back in 2007 sponsored by the next level festival. Back then we had 5 teams, key words delivered by Robbie the Robot and a space where the air conditioning was either full on harsh or utterly defunct depending on where you were sitting. The challenge was won by Sif90 with their very magic sticky geckos. A number of traditions were set up that year, the challenge was web-cammed and the kitchen got very messy and was given its own journal, we discovered that people mad enough to enter the challenge were quite happy to live on noodles … and that it was a helluva lot of mayhem and hard fun!

2011 and everyone discovers that 48 hour game jams can indeed save the industry

The aunties went to GCAP 2010 and talked up the 48hr, meanwhile, The Voxel Agents recommended the game jam approach for all indie start ups over in their GamePron interview:

In January 2011, both Sydney and Melbourne IGDA were involved in Global Game Jams and we really started to hear about why taking part in a jam is so much more than fun

Pump up the jam

This is Game Jam – an annual event that forces developers and wannabe developers into a small space and asks them to create a video game in 48 short hours, a game which is then shown to a group of judges – games industry veterans perfectly placed to evaluate the output of these incredibly creative people.

Revisit 2007 – our original wordpress blog

The second fabulous 48 hour in 2008 moved into the much more glamorous space of the block at the CI precincts, just as well as we had 12 teams in there – and two satellite teams being web streamed from Canberra. The diet of choice in 2008 was of course noodles – this time we even had a noodle sponsor, the air conditioning was again either harsh or futile, the showers were not warm in the middle of the night … and Sif90 won again with the fabulous Melonauts.

The third fabulous 48 hour challenge in 2009 returned to the block but this time we had a whole new league – the professionals “living the indie life” and so we had to take over the big space next door – the glasshouse. Showers: they were warmer, air conditioning was still fierce or useless, the stakes were high and the games made by our compliment of 20 teams were just brilliant! Curious bear won the pro league with their beauty My Mechanical Romance and the 48 team winners were Black Wolf with High Hopes
